You’ve got questions. I’ve got answers!
How do copy editing and proofreading compare to other types of editing?
For comparison, I’ve briefly outlined the primary types of editing. TL;DR? Copy editing is the stage of editing where we are correcting your writing, and proofreading is the stage where we are polishing your writing. Both come near the end of the writing process (proofreading’s right at the very end, actually). That means I edit writing that is basically as good as you can get it without help. Of the two types, things that need copy edited are generally a little rougher or looser.
What do you mean by “nonfiction writing”?
I just mean pretty much any type of writing that’s not fiction.
There are so many flavors of nonfiction—essay, blog post, memoir, white paper, annual report, product description, promotional material, thesis, dissertation, textbook, news article, journal article, magazine article…
I’ve worked on a wide range, and I love (almost) all of it. Chances are good that whatever nonfiction project you’ve got, I’ve got you covered.
Can you edit my fiction novel?
I’ve edited fiction before, but I really shine with nonfiction editing. If you still think I’m your best fit, email me your reasons why at hello@kelseymitchener.com—or I can recommend some fellow editors who specialize in fiction.
Remind me again what services you offer.
I have five primary nonfiction editing services: The Encourager, The Fly-Through, The Fine-Toothed Comb, The Professional Opinion, and The Whole Shebang. (Click on any of those links for details about each service.)
Do you offer any other services?
Custom services are available. I work best in my wheelhouse, but I have a weakness for wanting to help everyone with everything. Email me your special request at hello@kelseymitchener.com and I’ll see what I can do.
One of the services you have is close to what I want, but it’s not exactly what I want.
No problem. Selecting from one of my five main editing services helps us be on the same page, but every client gets a slightly customized service, anyway—so doing something a little different isn’t an issue. Just let me know which service is closest to what you want and how you’d like to see it tweaked.
Can you help me decide on a service?
I’d love to! Let me know what you’re looking for and I’ll suggest the best match.
I need my project edited yesterday. What can you do?
I’m still perfecting my time-traveling skills, but I do take rush projects as my schedule allows. For projects requiring a faster turnaround time, a charge equal to 20% of the total project cost is added to the final bill. You can read about my pricing practices for details.
I see the starting prices listed for each service, but can you tell me more about how prices are calculated?
Yep. Read about my pricing practices.
How can I make a payment?
I accept payments through PayPal.
What do I do now?
After you’ve picked a service, just fill out my contact form or email me at hello@kelseymitchener.com.
I’ll need to know your choice of editing service, project word count, and project timeline. To give you an accurate price estimate, I’ll also need to see the completed materials to be edited, not just a sample.
That’s it! I’ll get back with you ASAP. While you wait, you can read about the rest of the process.
You still haven’t answered my question!
No worries—that’s easily fixed! Just fill out my contact form or email me at hello@kelseymitchener.com. I’ll get back with you ASAP.
