In the Studio | Colorado Springs

Colorado editing office

I’ve been quiet all summer, but now that I’m settled into my new home in Colorado Springs, Colorado, I hope to find more time to update this online space. Today I’m popping in to give a little update and to share with you my new editing studio.

studio setup

I realized that several months ago I promised to share a look inside my studio space, and I’ve finally gotten around to taking some photos. It’s probably always going to be a work in progress, but I thought it would be fun to have a record of the current setup. Maybe the next time I have an update, I’ll also have better photography skills. 🙂

The desk (similar) and chair are from IKEA. I stained the desk’s legs and love how the little shelves give me easy access to my most-used reference books. To the right of the desk I’ve tucked away a photography lightbox Nathan built for me, as well as a beautiful, vintage Replogle black ocean globe (I’ve always wanted one of these!).

This was a Christmas gift from my parents. Nathan and I recently refinished the stand (really pretty walnut), and I love how it turned out.

Here are a few of the things on my desktop, including the best candle ever—oatmeal cookie (similar)! I’m trying to keep the desk mostly clear except for the things I use every day. I’m glad Nathan talked me into upsizing to the mid-sized desktop— it’s nice to have the space to spread out.

mini gallery

On the main wall I have a mini gallery wall started, including prints of Marc Chagall paintings that we displayed at our wedding, the poster for the 2011 film version of Jane Eyre (Nathan and I saw this at the Chicago premiere), a You Make Everything Beautiful print from Rifle Paper Co., and Starry Night Deconstructed. I plan to add to this as soon as some lovely picture frames I’ve been watching finally go on sale.

Behind my desk I have two ceiling-height bookshelves, and a few weeks ago I played around with roughly organizing the books by color. I’m a little late in hopping on this bandwagon, but it’s fun for a change and makes me look at my library in a new way.

Finally, to the left of my desk I have my work calendar and another print from Rifle Paper Co. The garland is from Oh Joy for Target and is a good reminder to enjoy every day. Happy April!

Thanks for letting me share! What does your home workspace look like?

South African pottery

Earlier this week I received a batch of handmade South African ceramics from an editing client. I’m in love with these rainbow-bright bowls, and they’ve found homes all over my studio: nestled on bookshelves, on my desk corner… (I doubt there could be a cuter paperclip holder.) Thought I’d share these fun faces with you, in the hope that they make you smile, too.

P.S. You can sneak a peek at some of my favorite books. Any here that you also love?

Merry Christmas!

mini Chicago Manual of Style ornament, in progress

Merry Christmas! For the next two weeks, my husband and I will be alternating between celebration and hibernation modes, and I’m looking forward to the time off together to enjoy the holiday season. Between baking cookies, watching movies, and wrapping up the last of the presents, I’ll be doing some behind-the-scenes updates on this website and catching up on a slew of business articles I bookmarked for later (the future is now!).

The house is decked out in mistletoe and twinkle lights, and I’ve even added some holiday cheer to my editing studio with some candles, tinsel, and a tiny Christmas tree. I came across this mini style book ornament on the Chicago Manual of Style website earlier in the week and had to add it to my little tree. I love that it has a few actual pages tucked inside. I’m hoping for the real thing under my tree later this week—fingers crossed! 🙂 (Here and here are a few other things I’ve had my eye on this season. What’s on your wishlist?)

In the Studio

DSCF2314This week was my first in my new studio, and I’m really enjoying the dedicated work space. Already the room has seen me working on invoicing, contract revisions, brainstorming for advertising, and updating my website—and some copyediting projects, of course! I’ve been gradually piecing together the room with favorite and new items: a new lamp, my trusty reference books, a handful of my best pens. Tonight I’ll be recruiting my husband for help hanging a mini gallery wall of art prints and photos; I hope to grow this collection over the next few years. I look forward to sharing the entire space with you guys when it’s finished!
