Today’s the day! As of June 1 I’m freelance editing full-time! *happy dance*
I’ve been editing professionally for over a decade, but it was just three years ago that I started Kelsey Mitchener Editing as an official business. Now I’m making the jump to this being my full-time gig, and I couldn’t be happier about it.
It’s my editing business’s birthday!
Last year I celebrated one year of being in business by starting this blog. I’m a haphazard blog poster (I’ve posted just 26 times in a year), but I’ve had over a thousand visitors in the past year, and I get a kick out of seeing all the different countries you guys hail from. My numbers are really modest by any measure, but I love the connections I’ve made through this space.
Other highlights from the past year: since last September I’ve more than doubled my annual editing income (yay!). This year I’ve edited a wide variety of documents—magazines, newsletters, book proposals, grant proposals, survey briefs, devotionals, a textbook, and more. I’ve designed a handful of magazine issues, a book cover, and an e-book. I’ve taken an editing course, attended a writing conference and a literature conference, and landed a new job working in a university writing center.
I have a bad habit of always being focused on to-do lists, so it’s nice sometimes to pause and look back at what’s been done. It’s been a good year of business. 🙂 Here’s to more great years of editing!

If you follow me elsewhere online (or, you know, you’re a friend IRL), you know that I’ve recently landed a new job!
I’m moving into a new position helping direct a university writing center. Yay!
There are lots of things I love about this. I worked as a student at this same writing center for four years, so I’m familiar with and fond of this particular place. Since I’ll be spending the majority of my day working one-on-one with students on their writing, my 9-to-5 will dovetail beautifully with my freelance editing work. And, bonus, my new office is actually inside a library. Score!
Students don’t arrive back on campus for several weeks, so meanwhile, I’m spending my time thinking about the really important things, like how to furnish my office space. Should I place a mirror or a large poster on the back wall? Which of my favorite reference books should come along with me (vs. staying at home in my freelance studio)? So many important questions.

Today I’m excited to be celebrating the first year of my editing business!
Though I’ve been editing professionally for nearly a decade, it’s been just within the past year that I’ve set up my own freelance studio. And it’s been a great first year! I’ve enjoyed growing at my own pace, soaking up small business and freelance editing advice, and especially working with new and returning clients on exciting projects. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had this year, and I’m excited to see where this new path takes me. I plan to use this blog space to track my adventures along the way. I hope you’ll join me!
My business and I almost share a birthday; my big day is Tuesday (and my husband’s was just last week). Birthday season around here means party banners and eating chocolate frosting straight from the can. And ice cream—but then around here, there’s always ice cream. A successful year in business, I think, calls for at least an extra scoop.
Thanks so much for following along.
